Definitions of Tree Cabling, Bracing, and Rodding
Tree Cabling - the use of cables to stabilize an established growing tree or growing branch in a way that the tree or branch would fail if left uncorrected. For example, cabling is used to save a tree with a split trunk. Without the cabling, such trunks would eventually rip apart as the tree continues to grow. Cabling is also used to support a large branch growing at an unstable angle. In the case of the unstable angle of the growing branch, tree cabling is a preventive measure. This may be further supported by tree rodding, in which we drill a hole through the ends of both fissures of a tree trunk or tree branch while the cabling is concurrently advancing. The rod is pushed through the tree at multiple angles and secured with nuts and bolts for further support. Rods tend to be installed just below or above the defect of interest.
Tree Bracing - Tree bracing is almost always supplemented with cables, whereas cables may be used alone. Bracing is where the arborist takes a length of wood or a bar and places it under a large limb or against the trunk to prevent separation and failure. Bracing is pretty straight-forward. The first step in bracing is to determine the number and size of the rods inserted to properly support the weight of the stressed areas of the tree. If there is a significant amount of separation, another tensioning device may be used to close the crack. Once that is done holes will be drilled through the trunk pieces, where a rod will be inserted to ensure a snug fit. Over time, the trees will develop new tissue and bark that surround the hardware. The new wood provides a stronger anchor for the tree and improves the overall strength of the support system.

How Cabling and Bracing Works
Tree cabling bracing is a tree maintenance service done by arborists to maintain a tree's structure. It adds strong braces, strong cables, or both to prevent possible damage or failure. The cables are made of flexible steel, which are then added between branches or trunks. They are then attached to bracing rods or bolts which are attached to the tree.
In the process of undergoing this procedure, we remove any dead branches which may turn into a projectile weapon during a storm. Tree cabling and bracing reduces the movement of healthy branches and trunks in addition to providing support to weak spots, thus limiting the stress the whole tree feels during high winds and heavy rains.
The first step in tree bracing and cabling is to evaluate all the risk factors of the tree, especially the probability of future failure. We check the amount of failing material we are attempting to save, and set goals for healing. We want this to truly cause the tree to heal and grow while using the cables and bracing as a support, not to rely solely on these materials.

Helps Prevent Failure of the Tree or Tree Branch
Most trees grow into healthy productive specimens, though some come as a variant, known as a "v-crotch" tree. Some branches diverge and form "v-crotch" branches. It is not unusual for branches to undergo this type of growth. The main concern is that cabling and bracing is able to maintain the structural integrity of these branches while undergoing heavy forces, like the wind. Because this is something that is avoided with cutting one of the branches, this is something that Austin Treeworks is able to do with its tree trimming and pruning service. Tree bracing and cabling is a tree maintenance procedure which many customers do not know about. Just like with any other tree maintenance procedure, such as tree trimming and cutting, Austin Treeworks is the number one choice.
In case you remember, Hurricane Harvey did damage to many states. Luckily the city of Austin was able to avoid much of the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey. Lots of the wind and rain damage downed many trees throughout Austin, TX. Many trees were uprooted entirely or had their branches flinging everywhere. Many trees survived the storms, with much of them benefitting from cabling and bracing. Cabling and bracing ensures that the trees are better able to handle damaging situations like that.

Prevents Property Damage
The installation of cabling and bracing prevents damage to other structures and people who may be within the vicinity of the tree. Even though dying trees are especially prone to fall and cause damage, any tree is able to lose part of its branches or fall into a piece of property, such as cars, houses, into the pool, and on any other object.
T'his may seem like something that may not happen to you; however, you may be feel differently when you hear from other customers who needed emergency tree services, because their tree branch fell on their car and broke the windshield or a branch fell in the pool while one of their children were swimming.

Restores Strength to Damaged Trees
Tree branches provide strength and balance to a tree, so it is actually useful to keep a tree branch. If a branch or multiple branches are destroyed, it may cause weakness and loss of structural integrity to the rest of the tree's branches. Therefore, having cabling and bracing may function as "surrogate branching" for the tree when a branch or several branches fail. This may prolong the tree's natural lifespan and prevent more branch failure.

Tree Cabling and Bracing is a Tree Maintenance Service
Because cabling and bracing are installed with the tree's growth parameters and state at the time, we know that as trees grow and develop, the cables may need to be adjusted by one of our arborists in order to preserve the stability of the tree.
We acknowledge that our arborists are excellent at having the job done, so the cables should be able to last ten years before needing a replacement. We do annual inspections to be sure the cables are doing their job.
Since cabling and bracing is a maintenance procedure and is effective in maintaining the strength of a tree and protecting property, it is a solution for some problems. However, it does not work for every tree, especially the trees that are too weak for it to be effective. Sometimes, customers do not want to deal with the cost of the maintenance of cabling and bracing, especially if it means continuous monitoring. There are other options to saving your tree or protecting the surrounding property that do not need to require tree bracing and cabling.
Call one of our excellent staff for your questions regarding tree bracing and cabling. We will be especially eager to serve you.
